What is the Sports Premium?
Primary PE and Sport Premium is an initiative that aims to help increase and improve the PE and sporting opportunities for children. It was first provided in the 2013/14 academic year and the current government has pledged to continue this funding until 2020.
PE and Sport Premium funding is provided jointly by the Department for Education, the Department for Health and Culture and the Department for Media and Sport. It has been allocated to primary school headteachers and is ring-fenced, meaning that it can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.
The Government believes that headteachers and school leaders should decide how to use the funding for PE and Sports in school. They are held accountable for the decisions they make through:
- The performance outcomes of all pupils compared with their peers.
- The Ofsted inspection framework, under which inspectors focus on the attainment of pupil groups, in particular in those areas where specific funding has been provided.
- The reports that schools are required to publish online for Parents.
All primary schools receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus £10 per pupil aged 5 or over on roll. Here at Albrighton Primary we aim is to use the funding effectively to ensure that standards of learning and achievement in PE and Sports are raised, with all children, regardless of their background, engaging in physical activity as part of the curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. Possible uses for the funding can include:
hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in
running sport competitions, or increasing participation in school games
buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for
providing places for pupils in after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.
At Poplar, we have agreed that the money must be used so that:
all children can benefit regardless of sporting ability
that the most able children are given the opportunity to compete in advanced
that staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional
Our schools overall aims:
1. Improve the quality of the school P.E. programme by:
Delivering P.E. focused staff training through staff meetings and INSET days
Employment of sports specialists to teach pupils and to team teach/ deliver CPD to staff
Investigating and explore good practice from other schools to further improve our P.E. curriculum
Maintaining our status with the Sainsburys Silver School Games mark school based on our sports delivery through Idsall Partnership Inter games and PE Coach for Intra games.
Supporting teacher planning and assessment with high quality materials and resources.
Purchasing high quality, approved resources to support the delivery of PE across the school.
Ensuring that all aspects of our PE provision are sufficiently embedded to meet the challenges of our expanding school.
2. At Poplar we are very proud of our club provision. In addition we would like to maintain our broad range of traditional and modern sports clubs to develop children’s skills and involvement in sport.
3. Provide additional training and access to competition for children in school teams to develop their skills as part of our gifted and talented focus
4.Continue to enter teams into a wide range of school sport competitions.
5.Continue with our intra-school sport competitions, so as to provide further competitive opportunities for children within the school.
6. Deliver an exciting and memorable sports days and a range of other whole school sporting events (Skipping day, ‘Ashes’ tournament etc.)
7. Maintain our designated Sports notice board area, ensuring that children are motivated and constantly aware of our sporting progress and success as a school, thus helping to maintain the high profile of sport in the school.
8. To develop the leadership skills of our senior students, so that they are equipped to become playtime leaders and coaches, in line with Olympic values.
