We recently held a parents workshop for mathematics. We concentrated on calculation to show how the four operations are taught in a reception class. Parents could see how a mathematics session is taught in early years, and then access activities for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and problem solving / reasoning. They also saw an Early Years power point explaining the curriculum for numbers and shape and space.
Addition-children found different ways to make 10 using numicon, dice addition and counting on games.
Division- children chose a number and tried to share that many sweets between two friends or sharing nuts between the elephants.
These handouts were given out at the end of the session. They will help you to understand how mathematics is taught in the curriculum both indoors and outdoors. Also there are ideas for supporting your children at home.
Subtraction-children selected ten pieces of fruit and played a game where granny eats some and the children worked out how many were left..
Multiplication - children rolled a dice and doubled it matching the spots onto the ladybirds wings.
