We recently held a parents workshop for mathematics. We concentrated on calculation to show how the four operations are taught in a reception class. Parents could see how a mathematics session is taught in early years, watching our number time on the carpet and then accessing activities for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Addition-children found different ways to make 7 using bugs and leaves.
Multiplication- children chose a number and tried to share that many sweets between two ladybird friends.
These handouts were given out at the end of the session. They will help you to understand how mathematics is taught in the curriculum both indoors and outdoors. Also there are ideas for supporting your children at home.
Subtraction-children selected five pieces of fruit and played a game where the farmer eats some and the children worked out how many were left..
Multiplication - children rolled a dice and doubled it matching the spots onto the ladybirds wings.
